Wills look at art in life and life in art

Light sculpture (2)

This is an extension of my earlier series. Instead of shining light through the milk containers, this time I have placed a small light into each container and set them out in a pattern in the spaces by or near my home. Some are more successful than others, however I do think this is a good way to extend the idea. Next I want to take my shining milk bottles a wee bit further afield. Perhaps into town or to the beach….

Light sculpture (1)

Jenkins, W. (2013). Digital photographs.

Had fund last night working on my first response to the work of Bill Culbert. I enjoyed playing with light, shade, colour, reflection and tone. I’m reasonably pleased with my first efforts, however still regard it as early days. Let my bottles light you up!

Bill Culbert: A light genius (2)

Culbert, B. (2002). Light Wine Things series: Bonbonne with landscape: France.

As part of this more recent series, Culbert has explored the way light transitions through and around a series of objects such as this glass bottle. I love the way the sky is revealed in the lower half of the bottle; the little pool of bright light coming out of the bottle is just amazing. Bring on the light!

My challenge: Culbert has inspired me to explore light as part of a series of small sculptural works. Watch this blog to see what I do. I hope you enjoy the results….

Bill Culbert – a light genius (1)

Culbert, B. (1989). Bottle Combinations: Cif.

One thing I really enjoy is use of light in art. I love the way light has the ability to bend and twist, change colour and appear different according to the time of day. Who doesn’t enjoy a stunning sunset or sunrise?

One of the light artist practitioner’s whose work I really enjoy is light artist, Bill Culbert. A New Zealander, Culbert has worked mainly in the U.K. since the late 1950’s.

Over the years his practice has made use of a wide variety of forms to illustrate the play of light on on, through and around these objects. The photo above has made use of something like dish wash liquid bottles. I love the way the light brings an additional texture and translucence to these otherwise everyday objects. Bring it on!
